Matthew 11:28-30 [NRSV]
28 “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I
will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am
gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my
yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
During this season of Lent, especially as we move closer to the shadow of the Cross and its
reminder of our suffering, we are drawn to the image of Jesus upon that very cross; his suffering
on our behalf; as a result of our sinfulness. But we also hear the words of Jesus from this
particular portion of Matthew’s gospel which tells us that even in the midst of our burdens, our
troubles, and what may seem as our hopelessness…Jesus calls out to us saying it doesn’t matter
the burden you carry, the obstacle you face, the hardship you may be enduring…just throw it all
on me, and I will give you rest!
Thanks be to God that there is no burden Christ Jesus isn’t willing to take upon God’s own self,
so that we may be able to find peace!
